Letter 003 · Dear Healthcare Worker

Your Hands Carry More Than Charts

5 min read · Purpose · Healing · Hope

Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

MATTHEW 25:40

Dear Healthcare Worker,

I have walked hospital corridors long enough to know what the statistics never show: the nurse who stays ten minutes after a double shift to hold a frightened patient’s hand. The doctor who carries every loss home even while celebrating every save. The clerk who greets a full waiting room with dignity when the system gives her every reason not to.

You work inside institutions that are stretched, queues that do not end, and resources that do not match the need. And still, you show up. Do you understand how extraordinary that is? Ordinary faithfulness inside broken systems is one of the bravest forms of love this world produces.

You may feel like one pair of hands against an ocean of need. But medicine has never only been about the medicine. When you learn a patient’s name, when you explain gently, when you notice the person behind the file number — healing begins before any prescription is written.

On the hard days, when you wonder if any of it matters, remember this: to the one patient in front of you, you were the whole health system. And you were kind. That mattered eternally.

Reflection

Burnout often begins where meaning ends. This week, keep a small note of one moment per shift where your presence changed someone’s experience. Let the evidence of meaning accumulate.

A Prayer

Father, strengthen the hands that heal. Guard my compassion from exhaustion, my hope from cynicism, and let me see Your face in every patient I serve. Amen.

With love and hope,

Tebogo Mazibuko
